McInnes Wilson Lawyers offer ongoing casual employment to their Law Clerks rather than seasonal or vacation programs. This allows participants to apply their learnings from University in a practical way on an ongoing basis. This program is different in that it:
- Is accessible to penultimate year law students (2nd last year of their degree).
- Provides an opportunity for on-the-job training and mentoring whilst studying.
- Allows clerks to be placed into a team and work with that team until they graduate.
Participants of the Clerkship program are strongly encouraged to apply for the Graduate Program upon the successful completion of their degree, provided they have successfully met the minimum requirements for entry into the Graduate Program.
Interview with Mitchell Cox
Mitchell commenced with the firm as a participant of the Clerkship Program and joined the Graduate Program in January 2016.
What do you like most about working at the firm?
The best thing about working at McInnes Wilson is the firm’s social environment. In addition to the development of professional skills, the firm provides many social functions and activities which allow you to create better relationships with colleagues.
How would you describe MCW’s culture?
As I had worked in other law firms before starting with McInnes Wilson Lawyers, I can honestly say that the culture here is second to none. Everyone in the firm is approachable and supportive which makes you feel like a valued member of the team. The camaraderie between colleagues makes coming into work every day thoroughly enjoyable.
How did you find the Clerkship Program?
The Clerkship Program at McInnes Wilson is challenging, yet very rewarding. You have the opportunity to apply the knowledge gained at university into practice by gaining exposure to real life matters. The mentoring and encouragement provided by the senior practitioners on a day to day basis makes the learning experience more positive and less intimidating for a law clerk.
What work have you been able to assist with?
I have been fortunate enough to work on both front end and back end matters during my time in the Construction & Infrastructure team. The duties can range from drafting construction contracts, undertaking high level contract reviews, preparing for all stages in the adjudication process and performing legal research. I am lucky to work directly with Principals and other senior practitioners who have provided me with the necessary skills and knowledge to hit the ground running as a law graduate.
Would you recommend the Clerkship Program to current students?
I would highly recommend the Clerkship Program to current students. Not only does it provide an invaluable insight into the daily operations of a law firm, the welcoming environment allows you to develop genuine relationships with other individuals and teams within the firm. This is a great foundation for anyone wanting to pursue a career as a legal professional.
