Ajay is a tax professional with strong analytical skills who assists his clients by remaining highly responsive and solution-oriented throughout their matter to achieve the best result possible for them. 

Ajay is a Special Counsel within the firm's Taxation and Revenue practice, focusing on Indirect Taxes (including Goods and Services Tax – GST). He has more than 13 years of experience in Indirect Taxes and has worked with a range of clients, from large Australian and multinational companies to small to medium enterprises and Government organisations.

Prior to joining McInnes Wilson Lawyers, Ajay worked for a leading multinational professional services organisation and brings across valuable experience in the areas of technical GST advisory, due diligence, transactional structuring and agreement drafting, ATO engagement and dispute resolution, and indirect tax technology and governance matters.

The client's existing processes, systems and governance concerning indirect taxation were unsatisfactory when compared to the Australian Taxation Office's expectations of a similar-sized institution.

Ajay undertook a significant transformation project to assist the taxpayer develop and strengthen its indirect tax automation, reporting and governance to ensure it met and exceeded the Australian Taxation Office's expectations across all of its business units and insurance portfolios.

The client was found to be non-compliant in its GST reporting obligations.

outcome achieved

Ajay undertook a GST apportionment and Reduced Input Tax Credit review of the taxpayer's historically adopted tax positions and drafted tax amendments for periods across a four-year window. The process resulted in a significant realisation of historically unclaimed and underclaimed GST credits.

The client (a large bank) faced indirect tax due diligence issues in respect of a transformational acquisition of another financial institution.

outcome achieved

Ajay undertook the GST due diligence process to ensure historic risks associated with the acquisition were identified and managed appropriately. He also supported the post-deal integration and structuring processes to ensure optimal GST financial and operational structures were in effect.
